While going over a few articles on smart grids, I was intrigued by a very fundamental question - do we at all need them in the first place ? While the solution appears to be a much needed futuristic replacement to the existing less-than-perfect grids across the world, having ample promises - to take care of leaks and losses, intelligent and green; the stakes are extremely high. There still exist issues related to planning, significant upfront costs pertaining to planning and implementation, high operational complexities of handshakes across different pre-existent grids, disparate stakeholder interests and scale. The question remains on the point whether there is enough reason against excitement to implement the solution in the foreseeable future
